You can just picture Five stalking Nyssa back toward the roundel covered walls of the console room in this scene. Love. It. Turlough getting manhandled yet again by dark!Five is a plus, of course.
“Old man, you are nothing. I am The Mara, and I will crush your soul and feed it to the ghosts that hunger in the dark beyond the world.”
Listening to ‘Cradle of the Snake’ right now. I’ve decided that Five should be possessed by evil beings who delight in doling out mental trauma more often.
Darkness isn’t always empty
With a rising howl, like a million souls tortured beyond the point of madness, the Dark solidified. Shadows rushed towards it like children to their mother. It grew darker, and deeper, with every passing second and each additional shadow.
Something huge cast its shade into the universe.
The pen torch’s tiny bulb died. The Doctor and Cadwell were embraced by the darkness. It heaved and sucked and clawed its way from nowhere, right in front of them. They couldn’t see it. But they could hear its first guttural breath, feel the rancid air on their fear-pricked skin. The blackness pressed against their eyes, filled their ears, probed every orifice with a clammy urgency.
Something moved in the dark, heavy and wet as a bath full of worms. A cold, moist finger touched the Doctor’s face.
Up until that point the Doctor had kept his eyes resolutely, pointlessly open. Now, as he felt its first touch, he shut them tight. The finger moved slowly over his nose and lips; the gentle caress of a drowned lover. The Doctor began to shake.
I’ve come for you, Time Lord…
Only I would read something like that and have fic ideas spring into my head… *is a sucker for Five in despair*
The Doctor's 'technique'
- The Doctor: Listen, both of you. A while ago I induced Nyssa into a state of light hypnosis...
- Tegan & Nyssa: What?!
- The Doctor: It's really nothing to worry about, just a little technique I know to help lower the mind's natural defences.
- Tegan: I've heard about men like you before.
- The Doctor: Tegan, please!
- Nyssa: What does she mean?
- The Doctor: Never mind.
More Five is always good, but…
In an attempt to get more Five goodness besides the audioplays that feature him, I want to read as many of the side novels as I can. I started with Divided Loyalties by Gary Russell since the premise interested me. It is a good book so far, but the companions seem painted in a harsher light than necessary. Might take a break from it and try another. I’ve got an audioplay or three to finish anyway.
